Because the first four books of the New Testament are authored by different men,
many feel that the events that were occurring in each of them are different or
happened at different times.
Some feel that the stories were passed from one person to the next. However, if
we understand II Pete 1: 21 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will
of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
Did it ever occur to us that the same Holy Ghost back then could also be moving in
today's men of God. I would venture to say, we speak today as men of God by that
self same Holy Ghost that moved the Prophets and Preachers of old.
Preachers today are led by that same Spirit, and it will be that same Spirit that will
alert us to the arrival of Jesus, but most importantly, it is that same Spirit that
reveals the contents of those separate books.
Let's look at Matthew 24, Mark 13 and St Luke 21. The events were occurring at
the same time. Matthew is refereed to by many as the Olivet Discourse, or Sermon
on the Mount. Jesus was describing to His disciples a series of events that would
precede His coming.
In each book the writers reveal that none of Jesus' disciples knew He would soon
be crucified for the sins of the whole world, they simply thought He was going on a
journey to prepare a place and come back to take them with Him.
Jesus told His disciple to beware of false Christ. He warned them of wars and
rumors of wars, of earthquakes and pestilences. In St Mark, Jesus tells His
disciples that during this time, they would be delivered before consolers and
judges for a testimony, but not to worry, the Holy Ghost would speak through them.
In St Luke 21, Jesus urges His disciples not to be weighed down and troubled with
the cares and affairs of this life, but stay watchful for His return.
In every book that was written before His death, Jesus paints a picture of
impending doom and earthly destruction that would scare the average person to
death, but in the 14th chapter of St John, that follows the sermon on the Mount,
Jesus tells His disciples to, "Let not your hearts be troubled."
Jesus describes these events as a women in travail going through the cycle of
birth pains and contractions, and that they were the beginning of sorrow. When a
mother prepares to give birth, she goes through a series of contractions and they
get closer and more intense as the hour of birth nears. Jesus explains that life on
earth will become more difficult and people will seek relief from anywhere as the
time of His return nears.
But we are told not to worry, don't run scared, God did not give us the Spirit of
fear, but a mind of power and soundness in these troubled times. Matthew
finishes where the book of Acts begins, with Jesus leading His disciples out and a
cloud receives Him and He gives them one final word of consolation, "Low I Am with
you Alway", even unto the end of the "contractions", all the way to the birth, and
His return.
Paul concludes, in II Timothy 4: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and
not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
John writes in the 22nd chapter of Revelations, "12 And, behold, I come quickly;
and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be."
It seems that the events described throughout the first four books of the New
Testament, that the scenes are unfolding right before our very eyes. The economy
is plummeting, H1N1 has the whole earth afraid, Iran, North Korea, China and
Russia are in the news on a daily basis, churches are popping up all over, saying,
they have the answer to all your problems.
It would appear that the Olivet discourse could be coming to pass right here in our
day and time. Who knows you just might be the generation alive when Jesus
comes. So it really behooves each of us to be ready, for we know not the day nor
the hour when the cry will be made, "Behold the Bridegroom Cometh, Go Ye out to
Meet Him."
